Is it worth getting a 970 despite the VRAM issue?

Will I be able to play games like WoW, Sins of a solar empire, Homeworld on ultra settings?

WoW is a heavily single-threaded CPU limited game during raids.

If you care about price to performance ("Is it worth it") then just get an R9 290 for 2/3rds the price. It's very close to performance and won't start stuttering when the GPU tries to allocate more than 3.5GBs.

Ty,

They will play at Ultra LVL X settings, yes.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Yes if you game at 1080p, but I will usually look at the r9 390 if you plan in upgrading to higher resolutions in the future.

Ty,

Should be fine

But I would get a 390

Recommend what is best, not what you preffer.

The vram issues won't really come out to play if your only going up to 1440p. The 970 will be able to play those games at high-ultra with a good fps although I would maybe check out a 390 if the price isn't that much greater.
