So my friend wants to build a pc. We cant decide wich gpu is better. So we are looking at r9 380 or gtx 960.

The 380 is a bit better, though uses slightly more power. The 280(x) is also a pretty good option.

if you don't want anything Nvidia-specific, R9 380 all the way.

R9 380 - more VRAM, higher memory bandwidth, more performance overall. Only slightly higher temps and more power draw but if the PSU can handle it and the CPU has good cooling it shouldn't be an issue.
