Alright firstly i am very new to overclocking, so i was wondering if i should overclock my Laptop asus g53 which has a intel core i7 - 740QM @ 1.7GHZ. what do i need to take into consideration? in case i will overclock it i will only do it a tiny bit.

Next i have a PC that has currently got an Intel Core i7 3770K @ 3.5 GHZ i would like to upgrade it up to 4.0GHZ or 3.8GHZ. should i do it?

My PC has liquid cooling, if that means anything.

PS. what exactly is the difference to have a good motherboard over one that comes with a normal finished PC from lets say NCIX or Best Buy..

Please help me out if you can,

I dont think you can overclock your laptop because there could be heat issues. And with liquid cooling, you can take your cpu to 3.8-4.0 ghz no problem because water cooling usually is the best. If you are talking about pre-built computers, the custom made pcs will offer you more customization, features, and expandability while the pre-builts are limited.

by "limited" do you mean that because of lack of space, i would for example have less GPU slots or place for hard-disks?

what will be the net gain from overclocking my pc let's say how many fps increases will I experience

and thx for replying so fast

Comparing a pre-liquid cooling & air cooling, exmaple: Antec Kuler 920 vs Notec D-14, which is better?

Pre built system may not have the higher end cooling a system needs when over clocked. They may be using good CPU and mobo, but they may not be very over clockable...

You should be able to overclock that CPU to 4.2-4.4 by just playing with the multiplier.

As for net increasing in FPS, it is impossible to say - every system is different. You should see a bit - but remember, FPS are typically more GPU related then CPU related...

oh ok . i have a pre-built "high-performance" PC that includes liquid-cooling, am i right to conclude that even with it being pre-built i should not have any real problems, when i overclock it to perhaps 3.8 - 4.0 GHZ?

No you should have a problem if it's a custom pre-built system.
shouldn't* unless they use a craptacular mobo :(

as long as they didnt throw you a Non-overclockable motherboard at you. yes you should be able to overclock just fine. Do you know what Model Motherboard it is?. Z75,Z77, B75... etc.

u could probably get 4-4.2ghz easily just with playing with the multiplyer if you dont feel like overvolting it at all.

Overclocking laptops is always ill-advised , the heat problems that will arise can cause serious damage to the components .

As for your desktop, depending on what type of liquid cooling we're talking about you should be able to take your CPU to at least 4.5 Ghz without having any heat issues.

Overclock, keep an eye on temperatures and stress test with prime95 for a couple of hours .

well like i said it's a pre-built pc by HP... so the motherboard is called "PEGATRON CORPORATION 2AD5" i really have no idea what that is... also i was playing with the thought to upgrade a few things. i kinda bought this pc, cuz i really liked the case ( yes i know dumb reason) plus it is fast etc etc
