Laptop specifications

leDomce

Starting in September I'll be a Software Engineering freshman so I'll need a laptop. The machine will be used to:
run Visual Studio, Android studio, maybe Virtual machines and other SE applications.; browse the web and to watch a movie now and then. My major concerns are:
1. CPU. Am I OK with 2 cores 5th gen Intel i5 or should I look at 4th gen?

2. GPU. Integrated 5th gen Intel or dedicated GPU?
3. Resolution. How high should I go?
More or less sure about the rest of the specs:
8 GB RAM;
512 GB 7200 RPM SSHD storage;
probably 15" - 16" screen.
I will spend A LOT of time in front of it.

2 cores i5 Broadwell? Is it ULV , or a normal mobile chip?Oh wait...I don't think Intel has reelased Broadwell mobile chips, just ULV ones. Keep in mind that most mobile i5-s are dual core as well.

i5 4670k @ 4.2GHz (Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo); ASrock Z87 EXTREME4; 8GB Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3 RAM @ 2133MHz; Asus DirectCU GTX 560; Super Flower Golden King 550 Platinum PSU;1TB Seagate Barracuda;Corsair 200r case.

i have worked as a software engineer twice now (apprenticeship)

as far as I know a second monitor makes a lot of sense.

if you won't use one I'd take standard 1080p, because scaling on these mention programs is very much non existent.

i would definitely get a 4 core cpu, especially when running VMs.

gpu won't play a big role in your case.

i hope this helps ;)

greets from austria
