usually for a mail in rebate, you will fill out an online form, print it out, attatch a copy of the receipt and the UPC (proof of purchase) from the product packaging and mail it to the adress listed. usually they even give you an adress label you can cut out and tape to the envelope. you then stamp and mail it just like any old letter. expect to wait around 2 months to get your rebate back. they usually arive on a prepaid visa or other card.

Assuming it's actually honored, too

I've never not gotten a rebate back though. It's pretty safe nowadays. Like 5 years ago it was pretty sketchy. I did have a few get rejected for some reason or another but 4myrebates sent me an email and instructions on how to resubmit it. I ended up getting the rebate.

Why not just lower the price? Never seen anything like this where I come from and I must say that it does sound a little dumb.

So they can make money from people like this \/ :D

I ignored a 30 dollar rebate because I was dumb.

About 50% of the rebates I send in I have to either send again, or email the scans I have.

I photocopy every rebate exactly as I send it in in triplicate.

Lying cheats.

MIR are a serious pain. I did two with my last build. You have to print the invoice and cut off some code on the box then mail it to them. Then 2 months or so later a prepaid card will come in the mail and you have to go online and activate it with a PIN and everything. I'm never doing a MIR again. Too much work for not enough money.
