I'd upgrade to a r9 Fury.

CF 7970/280x is still quite powerful but it also comes with quite a few disadvantages like micro stuttering.

Still gaming at 1080p so I feel like a fury may be overkill. Just want a solid graphics solution that can handle 2k texture packs and lighting mods.

390 would probably be more worth while. But it's a wierd spot to be in.

For Skyrim? Well.... You could go for a 390x. Or a 390... Maybe... But they're all pretty much a side grade.... The 390 being 20% more powerful and the 390x being around 30%...

Same goes for the 970 and the 980, but the 980 is about 35%.

Definitely considering 390. Just not sure how much of a jump it will be.

At the end of of this month I'll be ordering a 390, to upgrade from my 280. I'm expecting to be able to play most games at 1440P Ultra with VSR.

Well for Skyrim what you need is vram so yea....

I've already maxed my vram usage in skyrim so 3GB may not be enough...

280x crossfire is still very relevant. I use crossfire myself (2 290xs) and suffer no microstutter or any other significant "drawbacks". The fact is if you have a 7970/280x, get another one on Ebay second hand, chuck it in and away you go. It'll be cheap as chips and you'll get a tasty bump in performance.
