CPU + MOBO or GPU update?

Go to solution Solved by arniks8,

fx8350 is 125w @ 4ghz/1.32 or so V, but mine is @4.7/1.5V, that's even higher current then the 9370 uses and that one has 220W, so I was actually just speculating, but I think mine will come pretty close.

What exactly is ROG? ^^ I'd like to take the I7, and I don't necessarily need a rog board, just any Z97/Z87 you mean?

I didn't know about 1.5v on CPU :D. ROG means Republic of gamers. Some say ROG are overpriced 'n' shit. I like looks of ROG and my Gene costed almost the same as some regular Z87 boards without lots of features. For Z87/Z97 you should look which boards you like astheticly and which are reliable. I like Asus because their BIOS is really good and their fan control is good.

I definitely want to change to Intel sooner or later, but I just wante'd to get a 390X.. So i'm asking you what would be more beneficial for 2 monitor 1080p gaming/some video editing/lifestreaming --- upgrading from 280x to 390x, or from FX8350 to I7 4790K (and which motherboard) ? I got €500 to spare now, and would upgrade the other component in a few months.

Maybe a locked i5 ( like 4460 ) with b85 MB that supports crossfire and another 280x( in crossfire ).

See my signature. What I am doing is saving for a new 4690K (you don't need an i7) and a new Z97 mobo. When I install those I will sell my old FX 6300, old mobo, old PSU, and GTX 760 and buy a 390X and a new PSU. I recommend doing something similar. In all technicality you only spend money on a new board and a new CPU and end up with a high end PC.

Upgrading to an i7 is a little bit overkill, an i5 4690k would be a better option if you are JUST gaming.

But the FX8350 is not to bad, sure its worse than what intel offers but its not a "REPLACE NOW!!!!" cpu.

For motherboard i can recommend the Asus Z97-A, Asus Z97 Pro Gamer and Asus ROG Ranger (or Hero if you are gonna do some extreme oc)

Asus motherboards are widely considered the best with good quality control and build quality.

And the ROG lineup of motherboards have ALOT of cool features.

Ranger usually has failures.

what do you mean?

Quality control failures?

Overclocking failures? Cause i know about that

EDIT: The ranger doesn't use as many quality components as the Hero does. The Ranger is the mainstream option for those who want the ROG features for a much cheaper price.

Thanks for the motherboard advice. --- in my case my cpu is a some kind of "replace now" conponent, since I'm playing TESO and with my fx8350 fps in cities are dropping down to 15ish. That's not nice :(

Oh :(

Let good old uncle intel help you out

For me it feels kind of wrong, since I have been an AMD fan since like forever... I can't really complain about performance in games like FarCry 4, Dying Light and Dark Souls 2 and many more.. but for mmos it really isn't ... the yellow of the egg, as we austrians would say ^^

But back to topic: What would be actually more beneficial now? Upgrading CPU or GPU?

And if I upgraded my CPU, should i upgrade my RAM too?

here is my system:

  • CPU
    AMD FX 8350 @ 4.7 Ghz
  • Motherboard
    Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 rev 4.0
  • RAM
    Kingston 16 GB @ 1333 Mhz
  • GPU
    Sapphire Radeon R9 280X
  • Case
    Thermaltake Chaser MK 2
  • Storage
    Seagate 1TB
  • PSU
XFX 850W bronze (because I had 2 280Xes up to on week ago)
  • Display(s)
    acer 27", BenQ 24" 1080p each
  • Cooling
    Cooler Maser Nepton 240m
  • Keyboard
    Logitech K290 / Razer Orbweaver
  • Mouse
    Razer Naga
  • Sound
    ---
  • Operating System
    Windows 7 Professional

You would benefit from upgrading CPU, because fx8350 bottlenecks 280x ( unless you do 4k or surround 1080p/1440p/4k ).

Ok.. So, will an i5 be enought? Because I'm going to use my pc for 3d technical drawing and video rendering too in future...

I thought of something like this. And what about the RAM?

Well i5 can do mentioned, it won't be as fast as i7 or fx8 in rendering ( if using CPU ), but unless your work is rendering like 24/7 or so then i5 will suffice. BTW your link shows empty shopping cart.

Edit: you can keep the RAM if programs you're using don't benefit from high speed memory.

mobo and cpu, here they are, sorry. the i5 would be €100 cheaper, so not that much of a differance, cooling wont be a problem eighter since i'm already dealing with a ~220tdp cpu. I think I might go with the I7, leave the RAM as it is, and upgrade my GPU somewhen else. IF the mobo is fine for tweaking the i7 and i wont get any problems like overheating and stuff (I guess not since it is an asus)?

Almost any Z97 or Z87 ( might need bios update ) MB will be fine, but I wouldn't take Ranger, but Gene/Hero instead ( if you want ROG ). FX8350 isn't 220w, but 125w. Take i7 only if rendering is what you do almost all the time.

When you get your board and CPU, then take a look at 4670k and 4770k overclocking guide in guides and tutorials for useful OC'ing info.
