Hello,

I just installed my new 4790k. And I have some questions about the temps.

I am using a air cooler (Prolimatech Armageddon) and I am getting about 30 C idle. With AIDA 64 I get temps around the 80 C. I haven't overclocked it yet.

What I find quite strange is when I turn on AIDA, the temps are immediatly 80 C, en when I turn it of, in a second back to 30.

Is this normal or is there someting strange happening here?

*Edit*

I only have 1 140 MM fan installed on my CPU cooler. Got 3 case fans of 140 MM

My current rig:

CPU :Intel I7 4790K , MOBO: Asus Maximus Hero VII , STORAGE: Plextor m6e 256Gb + WD Black 3Tb, GPU(s): 1x ASUS STRIX GTX 1060, PSU: Corsair RM1000 , CASE: Fractal Design S.

That doesn't sound right. Try checking with Real Temp as it's optimized for intel and will yield more reliable results.

EDIT: Also, you can try reseating the cooler (somtimes too much or too little thermal paste or a slightly loose cooler could be the cause.

When the temp changes very quickly it is a big sign towartd bad mounting / thermal paste.

Reseat xou cooler.

I tested it with Real Temp and it jumps between 68 and 77 pretty often.

I thightened it just before this post to see what results it would give. It was first 40 C at idle so yea :P.

I think you need to put about a rice grain of thermal paste right? I try'd to use that much.

Do you guys just advise me to disassemble my cooler, put on new thermal paste and see what is does?

Sorry if I ask obvious questions btw :$

Well, there's something amiss with either the cooler or the chip. My advice would be, take out the cooler, clean the thermal paste, put a new rice grain over the center of the CPU, put the cooler on top of it and tighten the screws (not too much). Check and report back.

Just done it, Idle temps look the same. Load also. Just a sec and temps change to 80 and back

And your old CPU wasn't doing that? If not, then it might be a bad CPU you got :/ I'd give the shop/intel a call to see what's up.

No it wasn't. Was an AMD Phenom X2 965 BE though.

That one steadly went to about 45 degrees on full load on this cooler.

Dahmn, That would suck :c.

I'd suggest taking it to the place where you bought it and asking them to see if they can help. If they remount the cooler and it works, then it was not the CPU. If they can't fix it, then you're probably going to have to get it replaced.

Ive bought an RM 1000 from Corair, so I hope so :P.

I've just put on the stock cooler and the same happens only with Higher temps. What I also notice is when just Idle, the temps jump around like crazy. It changes every 1/3 of a second, with a couple of degrees. Not normal as far as I know.

Nope, definitely not. It's certainly something to do with the CPU or your cooler mounting skills. Considering how many times you've remounted, I'd point towards the CPU. have you been monitoring usage? Have you changed voltage?

Usage is like 0-3 %.( now more like 9 though, but still same problem) So that couldnt be it. And voltage is at this % 0.754. But that keeps on fluxuating too. (Goes from .754 to 1.290 back and forth, but mostly under 1.000)

EDIT

(and I installed the stock cooler exacly how Linus did in his video :P)

EDIT 2.

I don't know if it can be my sensor on my mobo (Dont know if the sensor from the CPU is on the mobo or in the cpu itself?)

1.290 is high for stock. Or so I believe at any rate. From what Aida64 tells me, mine always stays under 1.1V Maybe some setting in the bios? It IS an unlocked chip after all.

Look at the charts down in their site. The stock they list is what you reported and they got the 4 GHz (which i believe is stock) at 1.025V, Try lowering voltage and see what happens.

EDIT: IIRC the 4790K happened because the 4770K would overheat dou to issues with power and voltage or something along those lines (don't quote me on that).

At any rate, I personally prefer the 3770 as it's good and cool and hasn't been plagued by problems :/

Undervolting didn't help eigther, cause I could not even boot windows with it. It just would crash.

Still, it should just work normally on stock, especially when it is an K skew.

I'll call the company where I bought it from tomorrow, maybe they know someting.

Got it back from RMA, and apparently a pin was evaporated. I really don't know how it got evaporated, but at least it is fixed( I hope). First I am letting my motherboard checked out, cause they say that that is thr cause most of the time. At least it works judging the RMA report.

it works fine now, only jumps on full load to 71C ( after a while 80C). IDLE is about 30C, so I guess that's decent with an air cooler with 1 140mm fan. Still I think it is strange it jumps to 71 instantly, but I think I just got an bad sample.

80*C full load on stock cooler is perfectly normal.
