Windows BSOD with AHCI enabled

Go to solution Solved by jav26122,

Haven't had any issues recently. I think it's fine now. Now sure what the problem was but as long as it works I don't really care to be honest.

Edit: nevermind.... I restarted to install an update and it wouldn't work until the 3rd try. Whatever I give up. I don't even care

Recently I had to clear cmos on my motherboard and so of course it loaded optimized defaults which put the sata controller back to whatever it was at before instead of having it on ahci for my ssd. Windows is installed on my ssd and I've been using ahci for about a year with no problems, but now I can't. If I try to change the controller back to ahci I'll get a bluescreen during the windows loading animation, so I'm forced to use this slower one because I can't use ahci. :/

I've tried the regedit where you change the one registry value start to 0 etc but I still bluescreen at start. I really don't want to have to reinstall windows so if there's a solution that doesn't involve that, that'd be great.

Update:

I've tried installing ahci drivers manually via device manager with no luck. Every time I try to install the drivers and it asks to restart to fully install them, windows will bluescreen at the loading animation and I have to restore to the last windows update. I don't understand why it's worked for so long and now all of the sudden I can't get it to work again.

Also I'm not sure if those reports will be any help because I always restore after the blue screens sooo....

Okay. Follow this guide: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/61869-ahci-enable-windows-7-vista.html

When Windows restarts, enter the BIOS/UEFI and change it back to AHCI before Windows starts to boot up.

Tried that. That was the "I've tried the regedit where you change the one registry value start to 0 etc but I still bluescreen at start." part

Did you enable AHCI in the BIOS/EEFI after saving the registry?

Yes.... It only works without AHCI enabled in the bios

Do you have a Windows DVD/USB on hand?

You can enable AHCI in the BIOS and then boot from the DVD/USB and try startup repair.

You can also try booting the Windows' install disk and using system recovery:

You can run the command prompt and then open the registry editor by running "REGEDIT.EXE"

In the Registry Editor, select either the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_USERS window, and then choose Registry | Load Hive.

This website lists where the registry Hives are located: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/where-are-the-windows-registry-files-located-in-windows-7

Never mind... Apparently it works sometimes. I restarted aaaand blue screen. It had just worked 5 minutes earlier though so I just decided to keep trying. After 4 restarts it finally worked again.

I would prefer if it didn't bluescreen 3/4 of the time? Anyone know why this could be happening?

Do you have a Samsung SSD? If so, the RAPID technology sometimes fucks up the boot. This happened to me when I had to clear my CMOS and it turned off a setting that the SSD uses, so I couldn't boot into WIndows.

It isn't a samsung SSD, it's an ADATA SX900 128gb. It's had no problems for a year.

Re-Install the AMD chipset drivers. Those should include an AHCI driver as well. You can find those on the Motherboards support page, or use the latest one provided by AMD here: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows+10+-+64

After reinstalling those drivers does it still bluescreen?

Yes I already tried that yesterday. All the drivers from my motherboard's download page are up to date. Like I said, now apparently it doesn't blue screen all the time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Try installing the latest AMD chipset driver I linked to.

If it still Bluescreens, then you should do a repair install: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

You will keep programs, user account data, and files in a repair install. But you will lose some customized settings.
