Do you guys think I should upgrade my 4GB RAM to 24GB(3x8GB)? Would my board support if? Linus did a video and I'm curious to do the same but on different board and ram...

Spec:

i7 950

Sabertooth X58

4GB RAM

EVGA GTS 450 FPB

Rosewill 550w

My RAM is probably by far my system bottleneck, I disabled page file because I got an SSD(page file writes on your SSD, went from 200kB/s write constant to 0kB/s write... SSD never stop writing until I disabled pagefile) and when I turn on MW3, it says it's running out of memory but I still got 900MB RAM free and 250MB VRAM free...

On all the games I play I can max out setting and get 64FPS constant so don't need to upgrade it yet...

4 to 24 is pretty drastic.

I would start off with one kit of 12GB (3 dims)

If it turns out you really need the 24GB then you can always buy a second kit to make it 24GB

4GB of RAM is overkill for an average PC, and enough for a gaming PC. Most people use 8GB of RAM to overkill since RAM is so cheap.

So your RAM is a'OK. Your PC can run anything, you only need to upgrade your GPU and PSU. Your PSU is fine as well, but by getting something like an 850W PSU, you can run 2x 7950's. Your PC will still run the cards without a CPU bottleneck.

So as a conclusion, your PC is fine, Just upgrade your graphics and add another 2 Gigs of RAM if you really need more RAM.

Your ram isn't bottleneck, just the fact that bf3 and crysis 3 can play on 4gb of ram is enough, you could probably add a one more stick or two because you have a triple channel configuration if im not wrong. The best upgrade would be to get the Graphics Cards that are new. Using a very powerfull single gpu is best solution. Maybe you should get a gtx 760 for start and l8r get a 770. 780 and above you don't need and i don't think it will do any difference, and im not sure will the older cpu (which is fine) be supportive against the higher card.

I just bought this high end quality 550w PSU(could pull 630w from a review), I'll upgrade my GPU when my GPU dies or it gets too slow for the games I play, FYI "Smite" "Dota 2" "CS:S" at 2560x1600 64Hz OverClock on an 24" 1920x1200 59Hz monitor...

With your board youll have to do 6x4gb to get 24 also depending on what os you have you may not be able to use all of it.

In that case, your PC doesn't really need any upgrading. I you really wanna upgrade, get some RAM or better yet upgrade the whole CPU mobo and RAM :P

CPU is still quite powerful, the board still as awesome as always... I don't see how my motherboard and CPU is a way to get better performance... I OC my 4GB to 2000MHz... I guess I'll hold off on ram until cyber Monday...

Seems RAM is the ideal choice to upgrade then, ganna buy three 1x8GB 1600MHz and OC it like my current 4GB at 2000MHz... I'll built a new system after year 2021 unless my PC dies before then or too slow which it shouldn't be that slow by then.

Yeah your setup is pretty good, it can last you a while. Get the RAMs and then upgrade GPU when you need to.

I don't think 4GB is enough for a gaming pc, I keep getting warnings telling me to close Arma 3 because of low memory and everything is so slow compared to 8gb

It's quite enough for most people in my opinion. I ran Virtual Machines and tons of background apps and use 6GB at the most with a game opened in the background. But each person might be different. 4GB might not be enough for you, but enough for someone else and vise versa :)

Most games are 32-bit, so you would think having 4GB of RAM is enough. But 6-8GB is usually a good amount for gaming, since you're going to have to take into account what the system and other applications consume. Regardless, you aren't going to get any better performance from slapping absurd amounts of RAM into your system. If your applications are telling you you're running low on memory with that much to spare you're probably running a 32-bit version of Windows, which can only address 4GB of RAM, including your VRAM and a couple other types of memory. Whether this is your problem or not, adding more RAM simply won't increase your performance. In the vast majority of games, your GPU is going to be the major culprit as it was at the low-end for gaming when it was released three generations ago.

@LegendKillerRG how did you manage 4gb of ram on that board? The reason I ask is its tipple channel.

2x2GB ram...

For me 4GB isnt seem enough because I disabled pagefile aka virtual memory which writes on the SSD which is also bad for the SSD. I only opened MW3 and it's saying low memory, it even crash once too...

Btw, I got another computer which has a dead HDD, should I grab the two DDR3 1333MHz 2x2GB and put it on my system for a total of 8GB? Should I keep 4GB at 2000MHz or 8GB at 1333MHz?

with tripple channel you really should be running 3 sticks because right now your running in dual channel at best depending on which slots you put the memory in.

If you don't use your rig for heavy computing ( Rendering or Building models and such ) I would Stick with 12GB although you wont save enough money not buying all 24 that you could upgrade your GPU. That 950 was my first experience with an i7. Loved it. 200 blck X 20 multi @ 1.28 I believe, for the first 4 Ghz OC of my life. I remember wanting to hit 3 Ghz on a multi core CPU before that, and so on, and so on. I can't believe where we are now.

If you are just gaming on this machine, 8gb 1600mhz CL9 RAM is enough. If you do video rendering, I would get 16gb of ram.
