So buying one for around £140 (US equivalent is about $210) not too bad of an idea?

What brand/model? And new or used?

For comparison a brand new one is 176 quid http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/powercolor-video-card-axr9280x3gbd5t2dheoc

It's a damn good one. I got a 7950 (R9 280) for 250 EU and while I do have a warranty, it's still quite a lot more. Go for it.

I wouldn't do it. I don't trust those silver+red XFX cards. Had two die on me in a row.

yea they had an issue with low quality components. also how many components have you killed total? thats 3 ive counted so far

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Go for it, no question. XFX are very very good.

What 3?

The 6870 wasn't mine. And I never "killed" either card. One cut out in the middle of gaming and wouldn't work again, the second developed a hideous fan rattle and eventually seized up when I wasn't using it (my brother was, who didn't notice) and overheated.

That's just the two XFX coolers that look like this one (both 7950s), I've had 3 other XFX cards die on me, a 9800GT, a 6870 (single fan non-reference) and a 270X (black DD). Again, none of them caused by user error, but just poor cards.

this is the card

Yeah, I wouldn't trust them after I had two of them die in a row, followed by one of it's redesigned versions dying.

XFX are very very good.

Citation needed. I've had nothing but problems with XFX GPUs. Their PSUs are a different, much better story, but after they discontinued their lifetime warranty they don't stand out in any way from the other GPU manufacturers which I'd much rather recommend.
