This just happened to me for the second time, my GPU suddenly revved up to max while I was doing nothing but browsing online. No game was alt-tabbed, I wasn't even watching a video.

I looked at the afterburner monitoring and the GPU load was spiking up and down between 0 and 100% every half second or so. It was also making a really ugly sounding high pitched coil whine, much more high pitched than normal.

What the hell happened? I've just been restarting because I don't really want to leave whatever this is running while I try to fix it.

GPU is brand new btw, 980ti Gigabyte gaming model.

Edit: Using Firefox. I suspect that is the culprit because it's terrible, but I'm not sure. Flash player maybe? But it does not issue a crash report and like I said I was not watching a video.

Could be alot of things wrong with it. It could be from a hidden bitcoin miner virus using your pc to mine, could be your gpu is defective, could be anything.

Do you have anti virus?

My rig is brand new and I actively avoid going to dubious sites. I'll get some just to be sure. The last time it happened was about a week ago, so it's not like this is a daily occurrence (hopefully it doesn't become one).

Flash may also be the problem. It's horribly unoptomized. I was letting my little sister play club penguin on my pc and Flash was running HORRENDOUSLY (and I have a pretty beefy pc) but correct me if im wrong, im pretty sure the flash plugin is cpu oriented

Taran should run for president!

Not sure, but I did have "enable hardware acceleration" checked in the Firefox options. Maybe something happened with that interface that caused my GPU to freak out. Now that I think about it I should have also checked if my CPU was exploding when this happened.

Gpu acceleration should be turned off on the browser and in flash.

I disabled it in both places.

I'm almost sure it's flash. In both instances I had been marathoning anime on crunchyroll, a pretty janky site in it's own right. The first time it happened mid-episode. The second time it happened shortly after I had closed the browser tab, but I suspect that the crunchyroll time bomb was already set.

I'll be watching more tomorrow, I'll report back if it happens again.

Virus scan came up clean btw.
