Planning for NAS-HTPC

So I have my main rig and since games take a lot of space on the hdd and I would prefer less drives in my rig (more space more airflow less cables etc etc) I am thinking of build a nas place it in the living room and have it serve as HTPC too for movies and maybe streaming gaming later (new tv will be needed). So where do it start? Cause I have little to no idea about a NAS server.

 

Also can i make a house network or something like that ? Keep it off the internet but I want to able to access it from my main rig
