I found an old mid-sized tower in my parent's house the other day. It turns out that they don't use it anymore because the fans suddenly got really loud and it can't connect to the internet anymore. I figured I would take it and replace what parts I can, including the hard drive. What do you guys think? How should I go about cleaning and upgrading this old rig? I'll post the current specs below.

HP Pavilion m7557c:

Motherboard: micro-ATX, info below

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00714578&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3220013

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7500 LE

Memory: 1024MB (LOL)

I was thinking about maybe replacing the fans to make it more silent. Any ideas?

Perhaps I should do an OS migration to a new HDD or SSD. Do OS migrations include the data already on the computer?

Thanks in advance.

I had a Compaq SR1616NX. I put it in a new case, bought a faster processor, more RAM, an ATI X1600XT, and put in a larger hard drive, an SSD and quieter fans, all while putting it into a new case. I recommend that if you put in an SSD, get a SATA III expansion card. If you do though, you won't be able to put in a graphics card unless it's PCI.

What are you planning to do with it? Even if you upgrade it, still only good enough for a Media PC IMO. If you can find older parts and they are cheap/reasonable then sure if you want a project PC, but don't dump to much money into it.
