With the new AMD Fury seeming to be the new value card, I think I will pass on the 970 for sure.

Thing is now with all of this gpu talk, time for one lol.

Would it be stupid to buy a new gpu before I get my 1440p monitor or should I get the monitor first?   I am upgrading from a GTX660.  Please remember I will use the gpu for graphic work and 3D design and rendering and not only gaming.  Its important for me to have the larger monitor.

It depends really. If you're using the monitor for design and things other than gaming, then I'd go for the monitor first, then put up with lower settings until you get the new card.

If gaming performance is more important, then buy the card first and have maxed out 1080p for a bit.

get the monitor first as it will force you to upgrade. if you buy the gpu first you may just settle for second best!!

for £100/$100 extra I'd still get a a 980ti lol. its only 35 beers you'll be missing
