Okay, So I've watched Linus' video on overclocking this beast of a processor, but I'm not sure if that was for a long term constant overclock.
My temperatures at idle are around 27C and while gaming it goes to high 30s low 40s and while running realbench and prime95 i get up to high 40s and one time hit 51C. I'm just wondering how much room I have for overclocking?

Also is it a must to overclock ram or can I just leave it at 2133mhz? I didn't see linus play with an offset voltage or anything similar to other overclocking guides on the web.

I would prefer some type of overclock over 4ghz and have it at that speed during load, but while gaming and idle I don't want my overclock to be constantly on, for the sake of power saving and for the life of my processor.

Sorry for so many questions, I'm just not an expert on overclocking.. hehe

OH SORRY IFORGOT TO MENTION THAT EVERYTHING I HAVE IS STOCK

I have a 5820k at 4.5ghz at 1.3 volts, it hasn't missed a beat so far. I've had it for 7 months

what temperatures are you running ? There are so many guides that warn you about have a temperature no higher than 60 and 70 max but in linus' video he set his max to 80....

is your overclock always running ? like your cpu is constantly getting 1.3v? or does it drop down when you're not really doing anything crazy ?

-snip-

There's no way to know how much overhead you have either with thermals or voltages with only your stock settings. Every chip is going to be different and follow a fairly linear model of increased voltage = increased clock speed, until you hit the voltage ceiling for your chip where you will need an exponential amount of voltage to get a miniscule increase in clock. At a certain point this won't be feasible as you'll be way past the safe 24/7 voltage limits most people ascribe to.

I run my 5960X 4.375GHz core @1.33v

5820k's will tend to OC a bit higher on average, 4.4-4.6GHz range, near the same voltage.

Start your testing runs with VCCIN set to 1.85v, vcore at 1.25v, and start bumping up the core multiplier. If you hit instability you'll have to increase the core voltage, provided you have adequate cooling.

When I'm using it to its full ability, it doesn't go over 75 ( with a h100i ) but those temperatures may because I live in on of the hottest places in Australia

Its when dragons have so much sex that the cpu cant handle it

I found this video interesting too, he's actually got a crap CPU for overclocking, so this is a worse case scenario.
