Hello ok I was just interested in my new build and of course I want the best I can get as of right now on the market, If I'm will to put the cash into my system then I want the best of the best? right?  I don't do any 3D stuff but I am getting into video edition and music also of course I play games,  I was looking at the i7-3960 but now there is the i7-4960 so would go with that one but then I see the Xeon and looking at the prices there not so much higher than the i7-4960 so if I was willing to put the cash into my rig why wouldn't I go for a Xeon processor?  I know it's for a workstation, but all that power? lol   If I wanted to have the best right now and be able to throw anything at it game , application, work well you get it.  I would just like to hear your thoughts on it thanks very much for any insight you guys have.

Intel Xeons are designed for workstation computers, usually in servers and large companies. They are not designed for gaming and would not be as good value for money when compared to an i7. An Intel core i7 uses hyperthreading so it will benefit over an i5 in heavy workloads such as video editing. There won't be much benefit going with the X79 chipset as new CPU's are soon to be released. I would personally go with the Z87 chipset and a 4770K as this will bring the most price to performance for your use case scenario.

Xeons are for people who do a lot of multitasking more workstations, i7's would be better for gaming

Xeons are also for people who render a lot and don't want to waste a lot of money because a RAM stick decides it doesn't want to store all the data anymore.

A day lost by a professional might cost more than your entire i5 builds ;)

Get the i7-3930K or whatever replaces it for $600.  Do not get the i7-3960X or 4960X for $1K; they are the same CPU as the 3930K/4930K.  The only reason they exist is for overclocking competitions, to ensure a handpicked 3930K that will overclock like nothing else.  Unless you are using liquid nitrogen or liquid helium to cool your CPU though, you will not be able to take advantage of that extra potential.

In short, for any computer you intend to use as an actual computer, the i7-3930K and i7-3960X are the same CPU.

Xeons are server CPUs, it says so right in the product title if you look at any Xeon on Newegg.  They are much more expensive and perform worse than the i7-3930K.  The difference is that they support server-related features such as ECC RAM and they use QPI instead of DMI.  Again, if you are not running a server they are not really useful.
