Hey guys, i'm just wondering if there's really a difference between corsairs cx series power supplys, and the gs series? I'm looking into getting the cx 600w, i have a 3570k (which i plan to overclock) and am also looking to get a 660ti or something similar. Basically what im asking is would it really affect my system to go for the cx series instead of the more expensive gs series?

Thanks for reading

CX is a little bit hit and miss, they are Corsair bottom of the barrel PSU's.

I think the GS series and above are made by seasonic instead of the company that makes the builder and below series of PSUs. Also the Gamer series PSUs have subjectively nicer aesthetics even though I don't really like them personally. I would suggest a TX or HX (which is rated 80 plus gold instead of bronze) series power supply.

CPU: Intel core i5 4670k @ 4.4ghz  CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U9B SE2 GPU: GTX 660 Motherboard: MSI Z87M-Gaming RAM: Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 2x4gb Black @1.6ghz Power supply: Corsair HX650 80 plus gold Storage: Adata 64GB SSD + Seagate Barracuda 1TB Case: Corsair Obsidian 350d

They are based on different platforms with different performance metrics and quality. Like the CX430~600 is based on a modified DSA-II unit from Channel Well Tech (CWT). It's a low-end, budget oriented power supply. While the current iteration of the GS line is based on a mid-range platform from CWT - the PUQ-B platform.

Just to point out. Seasonic only make a few units of Corsair at the moment. The HX650v2 and the AX series with the exception of the AX1200 and AXi). SS also made the TXv2; however, they are being phased out and replaced (they are still being sold in stores atm though). Now the TX line made by CWT or Hipro.

Anyways, if you want to have another recommendation, it would be helpful to know your budget and what country/state are you from. Also do you have any plans to SLI/CFX?

I don't mind what brand i get, but i live in the united kingdom, would like to spend no more than £80-£90 but preferably less. I would like to upgrade to a 660ti soon, but very unlikely to run SLI.

Yeah, limiting your opinions by focusing too much on brands will make you turn a blind eye from other excellent units from another brand that may be priced better. It's good to hear that you don't mind the brand too much. Don't worry though. I won't recommend you a poor unit.

Anyways, if you are not going to SLI, a quality 450w can power your system like the Seasonic G SSR-450RM. Even a GTX680 if you want. If you want to get a little more for some leeway and peace of mind, I would recommend the Seasonic G SSR-550RM. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-018-SS&groupid=701&catid=123

It's internally identical to the Corsair HX650v2, so it's based on a higher-end platform than what you were looking at. It's out of stock atm though. There's one at Scan.co.uk, but the listing is riddle with typos, that I'm not sure if you getting the 450w or 550w model.

Have a look at this website: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/psu_manufacturers

This shows that who their psu manufacturer is. The best manufacturer of power supplies is Seasonic/Flextronics so I would get one that is either manufactured by Seasonic or the Seasonic brand.

Yeah their older series had a lot of SeaSonics in it.  Almost all of their SeaSonic OEM units have been discontinued now, almost all of their PSUs are made by channel well
