First, select your budget, be it 150, 200, 250, or even 100.

Then, find a receiver on craigslist.

When looking, you should look for-

5.1 or 7.1 (either will work, 7.1 if you want 7.1 or 5.1)

HDMI inputs (really, you want these, not optical)

around 100w or more per channel

Any other features you might need

I found a Sony STR-DH520 for 40$, is 7.1, 100w/chanel, 4HDMI inputs

Then, find your speakers on craigslist.

If you have the room for it, find some nice floor standing speakers.

Just look for some good ones from a refutable brand, and you can always ask to try them out.

If you dont have room for floor standing speakers, get some decent sized ones. Get basicaly as big as you can get, too small hurts performance.

Again, make sure they are from a refutable brand, and preferably test them out.

If it is just for your PC, you will not need a center chanel.

Try to find the same (or simmilar) speakers for your front and rear channels.

I found 4 Polk R15 for 60$.

Then, find your sub on craigslist.

Look for a decent sized one, as big as you can afford/fit, from a good manufacturer.

make sure it has decent wattage as well, no less than 100w/50w

I found a polk PW10 for 50$ (or i wish i had before i bought a new one for 100, but i found a used one for 50$)

And thats it.

My system of Sony STR-DH520, 4 Polk R15, and Polk PW10 cost a total of 150$, and will blow any logitech or similar boxed system out of the water.

Just left my house.

Doesn't take up much.
