PSU sata splitters

1Scotty1
Go to solution Solved by alpenwasser,

I have run up to twelve drives on one cable without issues. Should be fine.

(It's not twelve on a single cable in this image since I've changed the config, but you get the idea.)

Hey,

Probably a dumb question, but I need to check anyways. Picture the PSU SATA cable, long cable with 4 "outlets" all of them are used up and two are used on another PSU cable.

And I want to get rid of one PSU cable to reduce clutter and use two SATA splitters, so basically it will be a PSU cable with 6 "outlets".

Now the question - is it too much for one cable? Dont want to overload it :D

Thanks, LTT

I think it all depends of the PSU watts.

Yeah, your PSU needs to be able to handle the spin-up current for the drives, since it

can spike pretty high (not an issue if your machine does staggered spin-ups though).

Six drives should be fine though as long as you have a halfway decent PSU. My server

(the pic above) uses a 550W PSU, haven't had any issues so far. If you have a multi-rail

PSU, it might be a good idea to have a look at which rails support how much current,

since sometimes SATA rails aren't too powerful.
