Can I leave this open like this?

You're actually more likely to do damage with the side panel on as you'll put more tension on them. In my case which has so little space behind the motherboard tray, occasionally my hard drives won't be recognized by the BIOS because there's too much pressure on the SATA power cables.

 

You should be fine, just don't throw coffee at your PC.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.
