Settle down a bit and give people a second to reply

If you can get the Z906 set from Logitech....it's really good, otherwise I would get a cheaper receiver to be able to spend more on speaker and sub, but it will get really tight in that budget

lol, ok, it doesnt have to be a receiver, it an be a 5.1 sort of one too

My Setup :P

or should i not bother with the receiver please help

Going down the path with a new receiver and speakers can get very expensive. Your budget doesn't really allow for a quality receiver and quality speakers, only one or the other. Even then, I don't recommend buying a receiver without a single HDMI input these days.

You might be better off with a simple set up like these: Harman Kardon Soundsticks III, Klipsch ProMedia 2.1, M-Audio AV40, M-Audio BX5 D2, Audioengine A2+

These will all give you better sound over your Philips.

But the Logitech z906 like @chicksoup suggested is a great alternative if you can afford it. It even comes with a remote control which might be perfect with a television.

the z906 is over the budget, what would you recommend for me in that price range doing all those things?

it can be any speakers that you seem to think will do, just not too big as space is a bit of an issue
