I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE ASK THIS. IF YOU WE HAD A DATE YOU WOULD PROBABLY HEAR ABOUT IT.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

The 390x is a rebrand?

The top of the top of the top lineup consist of hand picked GPU cores of extreme quality. Due to the nature of cpu production, not all dies are created equal. Asus won't release 980Ti Strix yet because the production quality is not up to standard, or they haven't had the time to gather a stock worth marketing yet.

With the 390x however, they have been producing that graphics core for two years now. The production quality has improved so much in fact, that the reference 390x is more powerful than the reference 290x simply because AMD is confident that every single 390x is performing better than every single 290x guaranteed. So it's easy for Asus to pick up the near perfect graphics cores, however, because the average is of such a high quality, the strix version won't be extreme. At least not compared to the strix 980ti and the 980ti reference.

Also, ASUS is not willing to screw over the enthusiast market by releasing anything but the best.
