Planning build upgrade

Go to solution Solved by scottyseng,

It is preferred if you used cables that support SGPIO between all components. It's integrated into the SAS cable for the most part on all SAS cables.

Not having it will not cause any harm though, but your LEDs on the case will not be on.

Yes, you will need SAS cables that support SGPIO between the expander to the backplane. SGPIO controls the hard drive LEDs of each hard drive.

Congrats on the LSI 9260-8i. I have one myself, only with the cachevault module on it. Mine's been running like a tank for a year now in my PC. I plan to move it to a separate server chassis though (I managed to find a used Supermicro one near my area).

I want to upgrade my current storage solution for a larger one. I've already got my hand on a HP SAS Expander card and a LSI 9260-8i and they should arrive soon! The only thing I need is SAS cable between the LSI and HP card (already have SAS Breakout from an old 9211-8i). I have read a few things on SGPIO and have a few questions:

  1. Do I need a SGPIO cable between the LSI and HP card?
  2. If not, do having a SGPIO cable can do any harm?
  3. I'm planning to get a Norco 4220 case, do I need SGPIO cable between the HP card and the case backplane?

Thank :)
