Mine was a similar circuit to this one, but I used a 3v battery. It really is this simple but I would use a battery as the power source because it doesnt take much and it kinda needs to be isolated from the amp.

Oh, and if you go incandescent you can just connect the light right across the speaker. I generally use a couple christmas lights in series.

It just needs to be connected to the output from the esisting speaker amp.if you cannot do this, you could use an lm386 to drive the leds. The lm386 is a small audio amp and you would just need to make it so the amp clips but doesnt go above the leds voltage rating.
