Great brands, however, for the mass storage I would go for WD Blacks instead of Greens.

Blacks are way overkill for a "normal" PC.

Well, he never said an exact budget, so...... ALL OF THE PERFORMANCE. (He's also getting 3 SSDs, so he's bound to have money for a black.)

I think the greens are sufficient enough to store porn 'n stuff

Well, what if you want higher read/write speeds on your porn? Everything is better with higher-performance drives. Even porn.

haha..how much better real world performance is between the two drives?

Not a huge amount. For just storage of music, films etcetera greens will be way fast enough.

Edit: this is almost exactly the same as one of WD's marketing managers said on this forum, don't know his username anymore.

Greens are more optimized for using low amounts of power and being quiet. While blacks are optimized for all of dat raw powa man.

I would get 1 big SSD rather than 2 in raid.

I second this. You won't likely see any tangible gains in performance going with a RAID 0, however one intermittent failure of one of the drives and the system is toast (happened to my way back 3xRAID 0 SSDs) versus if a single SSD starts to fail you might get lucky and get a boot out of it to pull files quick.

As for mass storage, WD Greens are more than fine. Even for video playback they are great. If you can spring for 4 drive however and toss them into a RAID 1+0 you're really laughing because you have redundancy as well as a decent performance boost.

I'll actually amend this:

If you do plan to take my advice and go to a RAID 1+0, grab 4x WD Reds, as they are designed for RAID environments. Dunno your budget, but here's the breakdown:

2x WD Greens = $270

4x Greens (1+0) = $540 (redundant + performance)

4x Reds (1+0) = $616 (redundant + performance)

2x Blacks = $406 (performance)
