Having two problems with my new build

Go to solution Solved by 0x1e,

from the specs sheet, the Ram looks way off for the settings. i mean 1199mhz and that timing. looks totally wrong.

do you have a ram reset button on your m/board? or try reset to default in the bios.

does everything work at default settings in the bios and have you updated / flashed the bios to the newest version?

I think you should leave the cpu at default settings until you sort the ram out and if you do overclock, just alter one thing at a time so then you know if you get a problem what it was.

i am not super knowledged with msi hardware but i am sure from these setting that the problem is in the setting or compatibility of the memory.

The 1199Mhz is most likely 1200Mhz (might be 0.5Mhz off 'cos of BCLK which is normal)

On top of that it's DDR, so you double to 2400Mhz. Which sounds right.

Those timings "could" be correct for DDR4 but he will have to confirm.

I do agree with you though. He should first sort his rig out before he tries to overclock. What ever problem he has will only amplify with an overclock.

I just built a new computer and I have two problems.

First, I keep hearing a set of three short beeps through my headset at windows login and also every 15 minutes or so. The only thing I can find about this is that it is a memory problem. However my ram is being detected fine and I ran Windows Memory Diagnostics and it came up with no problems. Yesterday I reseated the ram and the beeping stopped but today it started happening again after going into BIOS. (I didn't change anything). I reseated the ram, tested one at a time, switched their positions and it's still happening.      edit: beeping solved. Still need help with overclocking my cpu.

My other problem is I can't seem to overclock my cpu. I'm using Intel extreme tuning utility to raise the core voltage and cpu speed but after a few computer restarts it goes back to default.

 Here's a picture of my specs: http://i.imgur.com/49V3ywy.png

Thank you for your help in advance.

Overclock using the BIOS/UEFI.

MSI afterburner is good to for over clocking too.

It doesn't overclock the CPU. Only graphics cards.

In BIOS most of my cpu overclock settings are greyed out and I can't change them. (like voltage and cpu speed)

Are you sure they're not set to Auto? You might have to change them to Manual.

I couldn't find any settings to enable it in bios.

Both your CPU and motherboard are capable of overclocking - you may just need to dig around a bit. You may find this useful: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/X99S_GAMING_7/8.html

Ohh really crap. are there any CPU overclocking utilities?

Intel Extreme Tuning Utility for most Intel CPUs and AMD Overdrive for AMD CPUs.

Okay. I'll try that when I get my PC.

I've been looking in my bios and I just can't figure it out. Almost every option is greyed out.

bump, still hoping someone could help me figure out the overclocking situation. Not sure why everything is locked down in my bios.

Are you sure you looked at every option? There should be one that enables you to adjust core clock and voltage settings.

Well I have an update. I'm pretty sure the beeping was actually my headset, I feel like a total idiot right now. I've had this headset for about two years (this is my second pair) and never heard it making those sounds but it seems to be fixed now so I guess my ram was fine after all. I still can't overclock my cpu though. When I go into bios almost every option is greyed out and I don't see any option that allows me to change them.

I am glad you have sorted it out, and the ram if it was running at 2400mhz then it is meaning that your computer is set to some sort of overclocking allready (maybe auto for performance mode) as even if you buy ram that says 2400mhz, it will most likely run a lot lower until the user changes it in the bios, unless DDR4 is running memory at 2400mhz as default.
