So here's the deal; I have got a snail-pace internet connection (1 down, 0.5 up) and and it needs improving. I am still using the free router that the ISP gave to me so I am looking to replace it.

Would this make enough of a difference to warrent the price tag? If so, what router would you recommend?

Thanks in advance...

Your router shouldn't make your connection that slow. There has to be a problem with something else, have you contacted your ISP because in a lot of places the ISP would be legally obliged to do something about it if your speed is below a certain amount.

Edit - Also those routers aren't free, they are included in the price of your Internet plan.

Edit 2 - It would help you you let us know where you live and what ISP you use, and what connection you have (DSL, Satellite, Fibre).
