bootable media installing

so i sometimes build systems and do maintenence for my friends and family. Recently i started using bootable usbs for installs of windows. Now is the bootable media for 8.1 pro different from the core version or can i just use one usb for the both of them and let the product code dictate it?

would need to make an AIO or use 2 usb stick

I believe the windows 8.0 key will not work when using the windows 8.1 installer, but you can skip the registration step, and once you boot into windows you can activate it using a regular 8.0 key by going to system info.
