Asus AC66u vs. AC68u

79wjd

I might be able to return my AC66u and get the AC68u for the same amount of money. From what I can tell, the Ac68u has a faster dual core CPU and slightly higher max rated throughput (1300+600 vs. 1300+450).

I'll be using the VPN client on the router to connect to it from multiple devices with the intention of streaming remotely (with the occasional large file transfer). So, would it be worth the trouble/hassle of picking up and setting up the AC68u and returning my Ac66u?

If you can get a better item for the same amount of money as a lesser item, it's always worth it.

Well, there's still the hassle of returning one and resetting up the new one -- so if I wouldn't notice a difference then it's not really worth the trouble, but if I would notice a difference -- especially when using the VPN (which is the only thing I would expect to perform differently) -- then it is worth it.

Vpn performance is the same, the router itself is a bit faster but not that noticeable.

Well, would the dual core help to alleviate any performance issues? I've read (albeit from a forum post) that the dual core CPU in the 68u prevents the VPN from affecting network speeds.

I tested them both and currently use the ac66u but I almost couldn't tell the diffrence in speed on the normal network as on the vpn.

But yeah if you can return it do it.

I meant while using the VPN network speeds become affected (plus, apparently the 68u has faster 2.4ghz speeds -- especially at longer ranges -- which will be helpful).

Whatever, I ordered it. I'll just have to return the 66u in a few days.

I don't suppose the 66u settings file is compatible with the 68u....is it?

I had a question about using a VPN on the AC66u. I plan on streaming movies remotely, now I still haven't gotten the VPN working properly on my computer, but I was playing around with AiCloud a bit, and I noticed it takes several (5~) seconds to load a 16MB JPEG and the CPU usage spikes to 100%. Any idea if this is a limitation of AiCloud or if when accessing through a VPN I would have the same issues. (Note: at home -- the router's location -- I get 50/50Mbps, and at work -- the accessing computer -- I'm getting 280/55Mbps according to speedtest.net anyway -- so I don't think my internet speeds are likely to be the issue).

Now of course the 68u should handle everything a bit better than the 66u seeing as it has an extra core that's clocked a bit faster,
