new rig looking at Raid 1 for personal files files trying to choose between 3tb drives

wd red pro or hgst nas drive - the wd red pro would cost me about an extra $50 each and this is what is making it hard to decide as i think the wd pro is a better drive but the hgst drive i believe have a good reputation

I'd use WD Reds, Seagate Constellations (Using them in my own NAS) and stay away from WD Blacks for NAS storage systems, as Reds have a lot longer livespan.

for personal stuff like photos i would prefer as muh backup as possible - i will be backing it up as well

Raid1 is not a backup. One drive corrupts the other can too...

Hey angus_pa,

WD Red Pro drives have great speeds, long warranty and work very well in RAID arrays, but they can be costly. I'd recommend checking out regular WD Red drives for your mirror array. Here's a link with more details on these drives: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ghkLA2
As it was explained, RAID should never be considered a backup as it does not provide redundancy against user mistakes or physical damage of the whole system. Good job planning additional backups on the array. :)
