5.1 Digital Output not working?

So I've gotten a receiver for my speakers that i had lying around (http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/42/98/405/VSX-329-K/page.html) and i intended on using the 5.1 option to get a surround system for my pc. My Mobo is the ( https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z87A/ ). However the only option i seem to get are 2-Channels and no way to use 5.1, the speakers are connected although only the Front R/L work, and when i try to test surround the other speakers don't respond.

Is there any way for me to enable this or is it just not supported? I read other forums and it seems that a way to make this work is through HDMI, although i would prefer to do it without.

Welp. I think some of the people who have been recommending HDMI would also prefer a different method for reliable surround sound. If gaming is not a terrible concern to you, you could use optical if your mobo supports it. Otherwise, there is no way of connecting a computer to a receiver for surround sound. Modern receivers do not accept 3 separate inputs for surround.

Your only other option is two send 2 channels to your receiver using a 3.5mm to RCA connector, and then letting your receiver mix the channels using Dolby Pro Logic. But that defeats the purpose of surround sound, in my opinion.

Hopefully can try with this Two options:

1. Use the optical S/PDIF output of your motherboard like Go to control panel>sound>playback devices connect the cable and set the 'Realtek digital output' as you default device, then right click it, go to properties, and in the rightmost tab select DTS or Dolby Digital or 5.1 (or something like that).

2. Use the HDMI output of your GPU. (This is what I'd recommend if you're using a HDMI display), Go to control panel>sound>playback devices connect the HDMI cable through the receiver and set the 'Nvidia HDMI Output' as your default device. Then click 'Configure' and select 5.1.
