Hi Forum!

I've just built my first PC and i wonder what antivirus and antimalware software i should get. I watched Linus's video about the topic and saw a bunch of comments saying that payed antivirus-and malware software was "shit". My conclusion was that i shouldn't waste my money and instead just go with a free program. Then i looked a little more in the comment section and i found a bunch of people asking wich program/s they should get but all the answers i saw were just a bunch of arguing and unexperienced people just writing a bunch of nonsense. Thats why I'm asking the question here on the forum, for a more experienced and most of all "filtered" answer. What antimalware and antivirus software should i get?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

Sincerely,

todipodi

A free solution is a combination of the free version of Avast, and Malwarebytes.

but generally being careful is your best free anti-virus/malware

I believe there is a chart on this regarding the paid ones, you can look through them here: http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php

(I personally didn't like my time with Kaspersky, it was a pain to use, I have a paid version of Avast now and it hasn't been anywhere near as annoying)

I use Windows Defender and Malware Bytes.

I also use Adwcleaner for deep cleansing.

I can only speak for my own personal experiences, but I would personally stick with Windows Defender (Which is basically Microsoft Security Essentials and is built right into Windows 8 and 8.1) and use MalwareBytes every month or so just to double check, and as others have said always use common sense and you shouldn't really have a problem, I've been running this way for about 5 years and not had a problem, but you can try Avast if you prefer, just remember it can be quite obnoxious and have loads of false positives and even more false negatives and has a history of flagging vital system files as malware and borking Windows completely.
