So my birthdays coming up soon and I'm looking to upgrade my PC. Because I think my gpu is being bottleneckedby my CPU I'm thinking of upgrading it. The cpu I was looking at was the fx-8350, choosing this cpu will allow me to spend some more money on a decent gaming keyboard and still spend less if I were to get an Intel i5-4690k. I do have a fairly tight budget. Many thanks [emoji4]

Would not upgrade to a 8350 since you'll spend even more money next year upgrading again. That CPU is from 2011.

and the amd motherboard chipset is probably even older with only PCIe 2.0

Energy can not be created nor destroyed, just converted to a different Type of energy.

Consumer uses for video cards don't come close to using all of the bandwidth with pcie2 let alone pcie3. As games are designed to utilize more threads and with direct X 12 reducing cpu overhead you may be able to get away with a 8350 for a while.

get the i5

I guess we should of asked what he has now. An i5 plus board is easily 250+ while you can get a 8350 if you already have a mobo for under 120 right now at microcenter. I don't know that the difference is great enough to justify over double especially on a tight budget and especially if you wanted accessories too right now.

Go with the i5 instead of investing in a dead socket/4 year old CPU, even if you have to replace a mobo it's well worth it in the long run.

1150 is now a dead socket too.. There are no new processors coming out for it what is your point?

Also there is absolutely nothing wrong with a suggesting a fx processor especially if may already have the motherboard for it. Yes an i5 doesn't bottleneck any single graphics card but the fx does either until you hit a 290x or above. Like I said with DX12 and better multithreading this is a valid option at HALF the price and possibly not having to buy a mobo. Chances are what ever graphics card he has now either isn't that strong or is already bottlenecking his processor. Either way he will get better performance. Im guess the graphics card isn't that strong because if he spent less on the initial cpu he probably spent less on the gpu as well.

If he gets the i5 he at least has an upgrade path (For example, 4770K, 4790K, etc).

If he gets the 8350, he is stuck with it (Or a 9590, which is dumb anyways), and it bottlenecks cards to oblivion.

You think it's just 290X and up? ha. Try Xfire 260X and above.

TLDR: AMD Needs to step it the fuck up or no one is going to buy their products, get the intel platform.

My current PC specs are an amd athlon x4 860k which is a dead socket anyway and an amd sapphire r9 280x

With this information I can no longer recommend the FX 8350. I figured you were already on a fm3 mobo but you aren't. While I maintain the FX is a viable processor on a budget, the difference between the cost of the it and the i5 wont really buy a significant amount of accessories.

To all the AMD Haters THE i5 has no upgrade path for a pure gaming rig. Arguably the best processor for gaming right now but the FX would have worked.

I recommended the FX because it made sense when I thought he had a mobo for it already. I know from first hand experience that the right accessories makes a game feel better than better graphics does. On a budget picking between an i5 or an fx and accessories the i5 loses because it wouldn't have improved his gaming experience as much, but as of right now the difference is just probably one decent piece of gear rather than possibly 3 pieces that I thought he would have a budget for.
