Out of curiosity is this install completely fresh? Because if it is I have a feeling if its "system" thats hogging the HDD usage then it might be creating a system restore point for the first time. People using an SSD might not experience a slow down when Windows does this because obviously SSDs are really fast. However a HDD on the other hand might feel the impact.

However I could be entirely wrong, what you could do is leave your PC idle for a couple hours to see if the disk usage goes down/away on its on, if it doesn't then its probably Windows and you might want to update to 8.1/10

Also have a quick look at this http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/windows-8-keeps-slows-down-to-100-disk-usage-and/cd787f8d-e7b4-4872-aecb-6f0cd15ad942?auth=1

yea brand new computer installed about 2 days ago. its not so much of a constant high usage but anytime i open anything it sky rockets making my computer hang and everything go slow

I would return that 980 for a 980Ti tbh. Also, just get a 256gb SSD for OS and system files. Then maybe another SSD for most games you play. And then a HDD for backup and mass storage for Steam and whatnot.

Why?

Price per performance imoh. No sense buying a 980 when you can get a better version for fraction of the price. BUT it depends I guess if you can get a better deal. My budget for a GPU is perhaps way off than what others prefer.

Why would you shit out more money on a card if the 980 is sufficient.

As mentioned, I think it's my personal reference to spend 40% of the budget on a GPU and gimp on the other hardware. And also if there's a good sale promo for it. Many mentioned it before, there's no point buying a 980 or a Titan X unless you bought it before the 980Ti came out and couldn't return it.

Or maybe the 980 does everything you need and you don't want to spend the extra 150$ for a 980ti.

I did the extended test on my drive and it passed. Just updated everything. still high usage

I'd check out the resource manager and see what is using the HDD mostly. It could be an antivirus or anti-malware program, backup program or something else and thus causing the stuttering and lagging of the whole system. Do post a screenshot of the HDD usage from the Resource Manager.
