Hello,

I'm currently running Linux Mint on my laptop and I'm going to upgrade my laptop with an SSD (there is an extra slot for it).

My laptop is an asus r700de ty016v. The 1TB HDD is a slow on (5400 rpm) and is SATA 300.

I assume the SATA port inside the laptop is SATA 300 but I can't find information about it.

Is it wise to put a Samsung 850 EVO 120GB SATA 600 in a SATA 300 slot?

Will I be able to get the full performance of my SSD?

Edit: I'm not home atm so I can't excute programs like dxdiag or the linux variant of it

You can provided you're on SATA 3, not sure what SATA 300 is. SATA 2 or SATA 1 will bottleneck the performance of the SSD. I can occasionally tell the difference between SATA 2 and SATA 3 on SSDs.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

SATA 300 is SATA 2 with a max of 3 Gb/s

Ah, well I can recommend you use an SSD on SATA 2, but an 850 Pro is a waste of money on SATA 2. Get an OCZ Arc 100 instead.

The price difference between the OCZ Arc 100 120Gb and the Samsung 850 Evo 120GB is € 5. imo the 850 evo is the better option then since it has higher read and write speeds

Get whatever is cheapest. You won't see a difference on SATA 2, I promise.

Ok thanks for the information

No problem! I've used a couple of SSDs in my laptop with SATA 2 and can't tell the difference. In SATA 3 I can, one is a bit faster in reads and therefor boots faster but on SATA 2 it makes no difference.
