About overclocking

Go to solution Solved by Dzzope,

Ok if gpu is 970 and a game is 65 fps at 1080p so if I overclock my cpu, does it make any difference?

If it had no impact than why people purchase expensive k versions to overclock.

BASICALLY.. it depends on the game... Some games like faster processors, others don't.

So in a game where your being held back by the CPU, then you should see significant improvements..

However, the inverse is true also.. Many games aren't cpu bound and will show no improvement at all.

Depends on the game. Tomb Raider for example will see next to nothing.

Depends on your GPU, and on the game. And on your chip. In general, nothing to not a lot.

If a 4690K is overclocked to 4.2GHz, it'll perform the same as another 4690K at 4.2GHz.

There are a multitude of reasons why people overclock their CPUs. Some people like it to brag, and some do it for the small performance benefits. Games that are CPU bound like Skyrim will benefit from a decent CPU overclock.

And I cannot give you a definitive answer as to how much of a benefit you will see - it depends on the games you are playing.

10%-25% boost in some games. Maybe even lower, depending on how much you overclock it.

I feel like people are forgetting to mention that every single CPU is different in regards to overclocking. No one can tell you how much you will gain because no one knows how high you chip will be able to go. If you want an accurate answer, the ONLY way to tell is to overclock and figure it out yourself. No one can tell you.

No number in this thread will be accurate to a useful degree. Your question depends on many variables, some of which are impossible to figure out without experimentation.

Moral of the story, just go do it. That is the best way to get an answer and it isn't all that hard.

Well, yes... but not all chips will overclock the same. So he may get to 4.7GHz, or he may only get it up to 4GHz. So the performance gain will depend on his particular chip and how well it overclocks.
