So this is what happens when you buy a new HDD just for Steam, and attempt to move your Steam Library folder over. My Transfer speeds are ranging from 150mb/s to 5kb/s but damn. Started out with just over 500,000 Items discovered to transfer over.

@Captain_WD I'm putting these WD Drives to test :) 24+ Hours at max RPM.

I wanted a separate HDD for Steam also... my games take up roughly 750-800Gb also... but my download speeds are a b*tch... 300kb/s powa!

I bought this 3TB Just for Steam, Origin & Uplay. I;m leaving my Boot SSD and 1TB for more important stuff.

That would be a dangerous, exciting and long trip for your data. I hope everything is fine and you system doesn't bug out or jam as the simple copy/paste operation often does that during massive movements like this one.
Do report back how the drive handles this in terms of noise, speed, temperature and consistency. :)

So how did it go?

Seriously, you can't tease us without coming back with final numbers.

How long did it take?

Did it succeed?

I'm a teaser :)

Looks pretty successful to me. It didn't take the day it quoted me and was done in less than 12 hours ( I was asleep when it finished ) but I certainly could say I've stress tested my latest WD addition to my family. The drive got reasonably hot, getting to 37*C, but I put that down to my new case as I switched from my 750D which had fans pressed against the drive cage to my Fractal Define S which has passive cooling only.

Noticed no difference in speed or anything, but I wasn't planning. All I wanted was to have a HDD purely for games.

As for Noise / Speed, it seemed pretty constant. Obviously with the many smaller files it slowed down a bit but it was reasonable. Never really heard the drive, to be honest.

* LTT forums wont let me use .png images apparently, so I'll add images when I wake up. 1am atm.

Thats quite normal for healthy drives :)

It wouldn't have been able to estimate the time accurately because of the all those small files fluxuating the speed - but the majority of the actual data size is typically large textures which would jump straight up over 100MB/s

I just copied 600GB off my WD Red to a RAID0 and only took just over an hour

I'm glad everything went fine. 37C is well within the recommended operating temperatures so I wouldn't worry about that. Transferring lots of smaller files usually decreases the speed of a drive compared to a single or a just a few larger ones of the same combined size. :) Congrats and enjoy the gaming HDD.
