I've been having wireless issues for some time now. Two weeks ago, everything was fine. Today, I needed to reset my network(s) and setup new ones. My router is a Linksys WRT1900AC. It supports 802.11ac and thus, a 5GHz band as well. My adapter is an Asus PCE-AC68, which also is AC and 5GHz.

I can pickup 5GHz signals on other devices, but not on my PC. I can only pick up my 2.4GHz network, despite my adapter supporting 5GHz. How do I enable it to be able to get 5GHz bands? I assume it is disabled for some reason, because the only networks I can pick up are 2.4GHz 40mhz. Why is this?

I would hope you have all updated drivers for your wireless adapter.

Updated to latest version. Changed nothing. Operating at 2.4GHz 40MHz. It is probably running a mixed node of 802.11n/ac since I am operating at 400mbps at the moment, but that does not change the fact that no 5GHz network is in sight.

However, I do not understand why it cannot pick up or connect to 5ghz bands. Why isn't it?

My iPhone (yea I know) right next to me can pick up my 5GHz network, but not the adapter in my PC?

The Asus PCE-AC68 can't work on all 5 GHz channles but the lowest. Configure the router to manual channel setting and set one of the lower end of the frequency spectrum.

That did it. Set it to lowest channel and it now is being detected.

However, the signal is awful, and despite being 5GHz, the adapter software says it is at "2.4G" and at 9-54mbps, which is atrocious. Anything to get it better?

Edit: Do you know of any good wireless diagnostic tools? I am using Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector at the moment but am a little doubtful of how accurate the readings it's giving me are. Is there anything better I could try out??

There is a seperate dock on witch you can mount the antennas and connet it to the card with SMA cables. So you can nove it around to find the best spot.

Also there migth be a lot of other devices on the same or nearby channels like you, so you get desturbed. I don't know a software, but when you search for «WIFI sniffer» you should finde something.

Also when you have low signal streng the router can't use QAM-64 coding anymore and have to reduce it, to maintain a reasonabe error rate.
