ok then i got my hands on a 48 port switch, FOR FREE :D i got it because it was never going to be used fsr and no its not broken it works just fine just that someone has put a password on it and limited some ports to ongly 10mb/s so first off i need to get rid of that password, so i found a manual stating that you can reset evrything by just using reset as your password and username but do i need to remove this? also the IO on the back, what needs to be plugged in and what is optional?

the switch is a 3Com SuperStack-3 3250 if anyone cares

It will probably take 10 min to boot up. Make sure its connected via the uplink port, try both. Then scan ur network for a list of ips taken and what the addresses are, there r some free phone apps that do this.

U need a hard reset of the switch, or try some other browsers.

to reset the switch you will need a Serial COM port  and a serial cable (DB9 connector at each end) For this particular one you will requre a Null Modem Cable. You can then use Putty to connect over serial to get to the switches command line.

On putty you use these settings: auto-baud, 8 data bits, no parity and 1 stop bit.

Then you can log in to the switch using "recover" as the username and password to reset its login details.

Default login is admin, no password

Looks like any RS232 cable should work. Doesn't necessarily have to be a null-modem cable. That's just from a cursory look on my end though.

@OP: You're probably in over your head, to be honest. There's no reason you need a 48 port managed switch--especially if you don't know how to configure it. It draws a lot of power, and is unnecessarily loud. Trust me--I use them daily.
