Hello Forum,

I recently built a system that is going to be a dedicated 'slave' computer, using Audio over Lan software. It's basically just all processor and ram power. I was looking for some help on overclocking my CPU as I have never overclocked anything before (I am a newb pc builder/enthusiast). please note this is a pc to help with workflow and WILL see a return on investment... also I am not gaming on it, I have another pc for that :)

Before anybody asks why I didn't go with a Xeon system, the idea behind this build was to overclock the most powerful enthusiast grade CPU to be as powerful as a Xeon twice it's price. Heat output and power consumption being a non-issue to me.

Also worth noting that to a certain degree, noise is a concern (albeit a minor one)

The following are the specs:

  •    Noctua NH-D15 CPU Cooler
  •    Corsair HX750i 80 Plus Platinum 750W Power Supply
  •    Asus Sabertooth X99 USB 3.1 Motherboard
  •    Aerocool DS 200 Black Edition Case with Window
  •    Kingston HyperX Fury HX421C14FBK4/32 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4 Black  - x2 (64GB total)
  •    Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB SSD  - Boot Drive
  •    ASUS GeForce GT 610 Silent 2GB
  •    Noctua NF-A14 ULN 140mm Fan - x2 (Front Case fans)
  •    Noctua NF-S12A 120mm PWM 1200RPM Fan (Rear Fan)
  •    Samsung 850 EVO series 1TB SSD  - (Storage Drive for Sample Libraries)
  •    Intel Core i7 5960X Extreme Edition  - (Overclocking? :P)

If anyone has any tips or can link me to some helpful videos on how to do this properly without destroying my pretty new system that would be just lovely :)

Thanks!

Did you see my posts before or is it just that we both start our thread with 'Hello Forum'' and end with 'Thanks! :)'? I do put a smiley after thanks. Anyways, explore your BIOS for some OC options. @NeatSquidYT should be able to answer your question.

  • 1 month later...

@Sam Z Man A Master Slave setup using Vienna Symphonic Library's 'Vienna Ensemble Pro 5 Server' which allows you to send midi data from the master computer to the slave, which get's processed into Audio and returned. Hans Zimmer uses the same setup but he has got like 20 computers or something stupid like that xD

@EMENCII Thank you :)

The link to @ProKoN 's guide is certainly a good one. However, I would add that for X99 you'll likely need to add a slight bump in system agent voltage as well as VCCIO CPU voltage. I have my sys agent @ 1.2v and VCCIO CPU @ 1.125v. LLC (Load line calibration) is also set to 3 (ASUS handles LLC with a 1-10 scale).

I can pull some BIOS screenshots if you need them, and good luck!
