Odd CPU behavior

Hmm, they don't seem too high for a prime load. I assume you don't have laser temp reader. Try putting your hand near (note: not touch) the VRM area/heatsink. If it feels like an inferno it's definitely worth putting a fan near it.

I wish I had a laser temp reader!

Anyways, I did some rearranging and came up with a somewhat ghetto solution to try and reduce the space my cooler was taking up to better expose the VRM and I've moved one of fans so that it's blowing onto the VRM. 

 

The thing I don't really get is that my temps have gone up but the throttling has stopped. I've been running at a pretty constant 3.8 GHz for over an hour with Prime95 going. If the throttling was due to high temperatures, why has it stopped now my temperatures are higher? 

So I've begun my preparations to overclock my CPU by starting by overclocking a tiny amount but after doing this my CPU has been acting odd under load. Although I have BIOS setting like Cool'n'Quiet and Thermal Throttling disabled, while stress testing, my system appears to be throttling itself anyways when the 'CPU' reading hits around 57/58°C even though the actual cores are a lot cooler and the thermal limit for my CPU is 70°C.

 

System Specs:

CPU: AMD FX-6100

CPU Cooler: Corsair H55

Motherboard: ASRock 990FX Extreme3

Ram: Micron DDR3 2x4GB 1333MHz

GPU: Gigabyte GTX660 OC 2GB

HDD: 2TB Seagate Barracuda Green

PSU: Antec 550W

That is hardware throttling. Your VRM is probably getting to its throttle point or your socket temp is exceeding 75c.

 

Also the recommended max temp on the cpu cores is 62c.

hmm there is a bit of a deadzone in terms of airflow around the VRM because of how I've had to configure my H55's radiator. Is there anything you could recommend to help with VRM temperature?

 

And I'm not to worried about my core temps, even when running at 3.8 and 4.0 GHz I've never exceeded 45°C on any of the cores but that could be due to the throttling

If you retained the stock cooler you could use the fan on that and point it directly at the VRM area.

Is there any way I can monitor my VRM temp?

One of the sensors in hwmonitor is probably the temp, but it wont say which you'd need to guess.

Well it throttled down to reduce the temps, perhaps the sensor on the board doesn't report 100% correctly in hwmonitor it's not unusual for AMD platforms to read wrong.
