I'm building my first gaming rig and I am not sure how much vram i need to play Ark: survival evolded at 1080p at a minimum of 50fps

please help me out

GPU power is much more important that straight VRAM numbers, you can get a 4GB GTX 610 it will run like a 610

ARK is currently in development and is in a pretty terrible state, from what i understand, as i will never buy into the "Survival indie Early Access crafting Game" Hype is that even a 980ti will not give you min 50 at 1080p as the game is a stuttering mess, the 290 or 970 are the best GPU on the market for the price right now and that is the card i'd reccomend

ARK if it actually continues to get support may become better running over time, but right now its a total dog and you shouldn't build a system around a game currently in development because the sys req might change over time

Intel i5-3570K/ Gigabyte GTX 1080/ Asus PA248Q/ Sony MDR-7506/MSI Z77A-G45/ NHD-14/Samsung 840 EVO 256GB+ Seagate Barracuda 3TB/ 16GB HyperX Blue 1600MHZ/  750w PSU/ Corsiar Carbide 500R

For ARK you should be just fine with something like a 970 (the current best value card on the market). Although, ARK is still in development so performance isn't that great. If they ever do finish the game *cough*DayZ*cough* then performance should be a lot better and a much more wide range of setups would do just fine.

As far as VRAM, in any current modern situation, you shouldn't need any more than 4GB. VRAM doesn't affect performance that much except at higher resolutions like 4K. But at 1080p you should be just fine with 4GB.
