It depends.

If your license is OEM (license from Dell, HP, Acer, Lenovo, etc) or System Builder OEM (what we refer as "OEM" which we buy in computer retail stores like Newegg, and NCIX), and you have Retail (the one where you can go to a big electronic store and buy it, such as BestBuy)

OEM and System Builder OEM are non transferable.

You pay less for the license (including the fact that you have no 90-day tech support from Microsoft to get started with Windows, and you have a basic box) for this limitation. The idea is to allow to have a more competitive price when the builder builds the computer.

By license agreement, the system product key MUST be provided to you. In the case of Windows 8 and 10, for OEM license (the one from Dell, HP, etc.) the product key is stored in the UEFI chip of the system. So that when you re-install the system it auto-activates, and you don't have to worry about the sticker. It also allows cleaner systems, by not having the label somewhere on the system.

Assuming your system was pre-assembled by someone and not a large computer like Dell, HP, etc.

If your key was not provided, and it is not a case of you loosing it, then to me, it sounds like a pirated version of Windows. Are you sure it isn't in the box of Windows 7 DVD?

Only Retail license of Windows can be transfered between systems.

Unless your new system is identical in specs as your current system, then your system image won't work.

Well you can't transfer it, as you have OEM license in your case.

Even if you had the key, it won't activate.

Your activation key is locked with your motherboard. In your case probably the product key is included in the recovery disks, embedded in Windows 7 installer. The installer or Windows activation will detects if you are on an ASUS system or not.

Are you a student? I ask because Microsoft has really good offers for students.
