So, a lot of people get a 970 for 1080p or a 980ti for 1440, I was wondering if someone who really value silence could get a system quieter than water cooling by getting, say, a 980ti and running it at a lower voltage and clock for 1080p or 2 for 1440. With a few undervolted noctua case fans, the thing could be dead silent. Of course, that's $300 to have the thing be quiet, but fi you valued it enough to go with liquid cooling, isn't this a quieter option?

Tip to those that are new on LTT forum- quote a post so that the person you are quoting gets a notification, otherwise they'll have no idea that you did. You can also use a tag such as @Ryoutarou97 (replace my username with anyone's. You should get a dropdown after you type the "@")to send a notification, but quoting is preferable.

Feel free to PM me about absolutely anything be it tech, math, literature, etc. I'll try my best to help. I'm currently looking for a cheap used build for around $25 to set up as a home server if anyone is selling.

My build is fully operational, but won't be posted until after I get a GPU in it and the case arted up.

If I get your point right you'd limit the cards performance to lower its heat output, run cooler but get similar performance than a 970?

That'd be a waste of money. Not saying that it is impossible (though I guess it's not easy to cripple the card so much to avoid all the boosting and whatnot, but you could simply figure out how to read out the cards PWM signal, rip off the fans, replace them with beefier case fans (there are dubious adapters that allow that) et voila, it's dead quiet.

Didn't Luke do a video where they purposely crippled a GTX ..something to have it perform like a 'next-gen' console and failed to make it perform so poorly? Maybe they also note some benefits regarding drops in heat and noise, I honestly can't remember.

I hate to nit pick, but isnt it de clocking? also lays on the forums did a guide to running your gpu fanless

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say.

For people who spend over the 300 dollar difference on liquid cooling a system + lots of undervolted noctuas etc, I was thinking it might be cheaper and quieter to use a beefier card and run it at lower speed. I don't think you would have to do all that, just install a custom bios for it like they do in the gpu fanless tutorial. My solution is just to run it lower.

A good rule of thumb I ran across is  OC Wattage = TDP * ( OC MHz / Stock MHz) * ( OC Vcore / Stock Vcore )^2. Focus on the last part of that. OC Vcore/Stock Vcore)^2. Lowering Vcore linearly decreases OC wattage (which is presumably pretty closely proportional to TDP) exponentially. Anyways, more of a thought experiment for silence enthusiasts who probably wouldn't game at 1080p anyways.

I remember that video; it was pretty good. Imaging a 980ti windforce with fans running at around 10%. That thing would be incredibly quiet, maybe to the point of noticeability. The CPU could use a big 3 fan air cooler w.. undervolted noctuas and... yeah this is getting crazy expensive. Well, ignoring cost what do you thing of practicality?
