First i want to say im new to this and know basicly nothing about servers etc. so you will have to tell me everything all the way i guess

I need a server or something here i can keep importent files on. Both as a backup and for safekeeping
I preferably want it offline if possible? So people cant hax it.

Im thinking i can spend about 500£ but more if necessary.
I have a bunch of empty harddrives here so thats sorted but i guess ill need to buy a nas server(if thats even what i need?)

Question - if this server is not connected to the internet, how do i put files on and off it via my computer?

Question - If the server is offline but i have the same files on my computer theres no point in the server being offline right...

I bet i missed a lot of things but i dont know right now what i need or how to use it.

Thought about using a service such as Dropbox? (cloud based, secure, 24/7 up-time, backed up automatically).

All you will need is a device supporting Dropbox (so anything with internet connection).

You can have your files sync-offline so they are able to be access even when not connected to the internet and will resync back to the cloud when you have made changes and next connect.

Sounds like what you want isnt necessarily a SERVER so much as just a Drive Bay. I have a Probox 4-Drive enclosure that i use to house 4-2TB WD Black enterprise drives nad i just plug it into my desktop over eSATA every night before bed and backup each of the 4 drives in my system to one of the drives in the probox, as a mirror, so then if one of the drives in my system dies unexpectedly, im good to go. And when im not using the probox and its drives, it just sits on my desk under my microphone.

Just buy a NAS enclosure from someone like Synology, Drobo, Buffalo, etc. Then put your drives in.

Many of these have apps for your system, otherwise, you can just use network sharing. Most of these boxes will give you instructions on all this.

If all you want is a place to store backups and files on, you are looking for a NAS more than a full fledged server. Check out the various NAS enclosures on the market, or you can make your own with freeNAS, or even just windows pretty affordably.
