i have a 500 watt psu, would that work, or would I need to buy a more powerful psu?

PSU may be close, im running my 280x off of a 650w, theoreticly a 500w should be enough but the cx series is kind of shitty.

It should work, the 280 has a power draw of about 200-250w so unless you oc your cpu/gpu you should be fine.

All cards have heat pipes... That's how they cool the GPU.

oh, i thought only some GPUs had heatpipes, but they all had fans unless they were water cooled.
