System randomly shuts down

Go to solution Solved by Semper,

So... a little update. I've found the source of the problem, at long last.

Fired up my computer today, VRM's fried, and decided they were going to spew pink smoke about my room.

I suppose the silver lining is, now i'm able to switch over to the 4790k :o

So, let's dive straight in to the problem.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

Specs CPU: FX-8350 | RAM: 4x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws Z | Cooling: Glacer 240L | MOBO: GA-990FXA-UD3 | PSU: Antec CP-1000

SSD: 120GB Agility 3 (OS) | Case: DF-85 | GPU: EVGA GTX 780 FTW | HDD: 2x Barracuda 2TB | 1x Barracuda 1TB

BIOS is up to date

Software running: variable, does not seem to be tied to event specific conditions.

What i've tried: Updating BIOS (re-flash of newest version), checking drivers (so far as I can find, all are up to date), Startup repair, disabling ALL startup programs, running in safemode w/networking.

Safe Mode boots and appears to operate just fine (tested for two hours+ with no failure)

Temps appear to be reasonable, given it's summer.

What happens: My system will randomly reboot itself without any prior notification. Windows update is set to manual, no programs are requesting a restart for update. It will be working properly, then suddenly, all three screens will go black, and my BIOS splash page will appear a few seconds later. Often times, but not always, the system will reboot properly, but hang and freeze after about 15 seconds after reboot (both when it reboots itself, and I initiate a hard shutdown and/or reset) When it hangs, I have no HID function of any kind, and I do not appear to regain functionality unless a hard shutdown is initiated (left for an hour+ and returned to test it with no luck)

I believe i've listed all pertinent info, however, please, feel free to ask for anything I have overlooked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

-Semper

Sometimes boot issues can be caused by the PSU, if possible test it with a different power supply and see if the problem can be replicated.

I no longer have any spare PSU's to attempt a boot on, however, I believe that I can safely rule that out as it functions properly in Safe mode, no?

If it boots in safe mode with no issues at all then it could be a driver causing the issue or an application. If you manage to get a boot error code or a blue screen the next time it crashes. Try Google the error code.

This was my thought as well, however, i attempted a re-install of all the driver I can recall having on my system, and the issue still persisted.

Unfortunately, it's not a BSOD, it simply reboots itself, and there is nothing to be found in the Event viewer.

Considering you have a 1000W power supply then i dont think your main power rail is giving in. Have you checked your GPU/CPU temps under load? Have you got third party software installed? You could have a setting, set, that makes your computer turn itself off once it hits a certain setting. There could also be a Windows setting causing it somewhere that turns it off after a certain period of time. Check Power Settings and other various routes for that.

Indeed, I know my PSU is overkill, but (my PSU is non-standard ATX form factor - it's antec specific) it only in came in 1k, or 1.2k. It's possible that my rail is failing, as the system is rounding about four years old, however I find it unlikely due to the stability of safe mode.

Under load, my CPU is running in the mid 60's, low 30's idle. This is rated using CoreTemp, so  I know it's not the most accurate, moreso because it's an AMD processor, however they're fairly consistent with summer temps of years past. GPU wouldn't be the issue, as it'as happened while it's not been under any load whatsoever, however under load, she's running at about 75, rated using EVGA"s Precision X.

I have the system designated to shut itself down once the CPU hits 90, i'll give the windows settings a check.

I feel it's also worth mentioning that nothing is overclocked, so any instability would be on the factory clocks.

The only other thing that could be an issue is a service running the in background causing it, an application or like you said, your power rail. I can't think of any other reason why it;s happening. Although it could be a motherboard issue where the power is not going through the board fully but i highly doubt that.

No luck with windows settings. I'll have to run through all the background processes tomorrow, see if I can single any out.

For now, though, bedtime, Got work in three hours.. :P

I appreciate the time you've taken here, thanks! :)

Any additional help would also be greatly appreciated, any insight from other eyes is never a bad thing!

It should be. It's been functioning fine for near four years.

XMP is enabled, no CPU, GPU, or memory overclock, nor has there ever been one.

I've attempted to disable all background processes (that aren't core system processed, mind you) and still experienced the issue. I'm simply beyond ideas of where to go next.

You're just going to have to borrow someone elses PSU and see if thats the issue. Or you could have a Windows error and a file missing from Windows is trying to load and failing, causing the system to shutdown and restart. They're the only other two option i think are avaliable to you.

I've managed to pull three dump files from what my system translated as a BSOD (despite lack of any blue screen), after an error report popped up shortly after posting my previous message.

It references BCC 0124, which appears to be a general hardware failure.

An output of the readout can be found Here (.txt) for anyone that would be able to better interpret them than I.

I"ll have to see if I can pull a PSU from work, as I don't have anyone else nearby that would have a capable PSU of powering my system.

There's your issue. Your boot.ini is probably deleted or corrupted.

Check your temps. Get speccy if you dont have a program.

Temps appear fine.

As referenced above:

Via CoreTemp (CPU): Mid 60's under load/low 30's idle

Via Precision X (GPU):  MId 70's under load, low 40's idle

I'll have to check out my boot.ini, never even thought of that!

No luck with chkdsk, however installation disc startup repair did find, and fix three issues, so we shall see if stability has increased. Will report back soon!

Well, it seems to have partially worked. The system appears to boot properly, however, I have now experienced a proper BSOD, i'll post the dump file tomorrow, however I believe it was a 1e citing win32k.sys as the source of the problem.

Upon reboot, a chkdsk was automatically run on my D drive, it found several errors, and fixed them, however upon restart, my system is performing another chkdsk. It's been verifying File data for nearly an hour. Based off of this, i feel it's safe to assume the HD is corrupt and/or dying.

Would a dying secondary drive cause issues like this? the majority of my software is on my D drive with some spilling on to my E drive, including my browsers, games, backgrounds (and other various pictures) games, etc,. Would failure to continually read from the drive cause a crash like these?

All drivers are on the C drive.

Apologies for the double post, however I have updated news:

Alright.... so I've got an interesting one for y'all.

I replaced my C drive with an MX200 and performed a fresh install of Windows.

Now, however, i'm still having an issue with my system indefinitely hanging.

With this being a clean install of windows, i'm lead to believe that the issue is hardware based. My first thought was memory, so I ran windows built-in memory diagnostic several times, no errors. I also ran Memtest86+ for a solid eight hours (With all four sticks in) whilst I was at work today, with no errors returned. I'm truly at a loss for where to go next.

Any suggestions?

Did your system show any symptoms like you described?

Try running your RAM in dual channel. I know it had no issue with four, but try it anyways. If that did not help, remove your D drive if you haven't already. Do you have any other graphics cards around? I've had an issue with a graphics card making a system unresponsive.

You are on a need to know basis, and you don't need to know.

As described, Yeah, it's still having issues with the occansional indefinite hang, where the entire system locks up.

I'm running memtest86+ in dual channel right now, about two hours in, going to let it run overnight, then swap out the sticks/slots tomorrow morning, let 'em run while i'm at work.

Unfortunately, the only other card I have is one that Asus maganged to ship back to me DOA after and RMA service.

Should either of the memory tests return negative, however, i'll get in touch with EVGA, explain my situation, see what they thing and/or what they're willing to do.
