Since I am doing a silent build I am limited to 520 watts on the PSU, but i saw a 460w fanless PSU for $40 cheaper. Can i still overclock the GPU? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qW3JWZOn eXtreme PSU calculator it said I need about 515 watts.

Be quiet! makes psus, you know.

I know, but still. I was thinking getting their Power Zone PSU's or the Corsair RM 650

You might check out a 700-800 watt psu. I know lots of PSU's dont turn the fan on until past the half way mark. Plus you'll get better efficiency around that mark and less chance you max it out and tax it beyond what it can take and make pretty fires.

i think i'm better off with a Hybrid PSU. Would you recommend the RM series or the Power Zone by Be Quiet! (I know the Power Zone doesn't have a fanless option on idle but it's quieter under load).

That PSU will be plenty. Don't know why people keep saying 800 WATTS IS BETTER because you're only ever going to be hitting around 350W with a locked CPU and a 290X.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

are you sure i'll only be hitting 350w under full load?

You should be hitting about 420w at full load. Have you considered a nvidia GPU? You could go with the 420w one and save $40 and spend that on a nvidia GPU.

Oh, it's a 460w psu. Yah, get that and you can still overclock.

50% is the most efficient mark for most PSU's. It wastes less power which isn't horribly cost worthy but it does mean you are producing less heat. It also means you have plenty of room to do what ever in your system. Upgrades are simpler that way. If you need 350W and buy a 400 watt you will burn it out faster and you have less room to overclock. You also run more risk of shorting something. Yes more risk. Lets face it though if you have double the chance you are still talking about a very small chance though it is a higher chance.

True, I would go with an Nvidia GPU but the cooler made by Sapphire is so freakin quiet. I know the Strix card has a fanless mode on idle but the Sapphire one doesn't even change noise when its under load.

Yes, 350W. I use this video as a general guideline. He uses an OC'd 680 + an OC'd 3770k. I would still get a 550W ish though if it were my own system to be safe.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

My preference is Corsair and I'm biased as such. So I recommend Corsair.

That's too bad. Corsair doesn't even make the PSUs. Most of their PSUs I don't like because of the OEMs. CX, CSM, some of the newer AXs. Eurg. The new RMis are superb as well as the HXs, but the older RMs should be avoided.

Check out the tech specs tab and it shows the efficieny chart. This is my current supply. They have them for other ones as well. I know i saw one for the cm430.
