I purchased FTL during the Steam Summer Sale and so far i've been enjoying it a lot. I've logged about 8+ hours into it just trying to beat it, still enjoying it though. It's a really fun game and worth every penny. Although there still seems to be that one thing that bugs me about this game, I can't beat it.

I've played many games over the years and I tend to beat most of them starting out on medium, or higher, the game not being too hard for me to play. It's just that FTL is a lot harder than any other game that I have played.

At first I first started out on medium not knowing what to expect, after a couple hours I realized that the game is a bit difficult so I had to resort to playing on EASY. It's still a fun game, don't get me wrong, I find something new every time I try to beat it. I'm just really struggling on the game and would like some help.

After searching the forum for a bit I have yet to see a post like this or anything similar for tips on FTL.I made this new topic to try to help me and anyone else having trouble with the game. I hope people who need help or someone who can help will see this and help out.

Things that I have come across that I always keep in mind.

• Try to upgrade to blast doors early in the game.-- I have found that I get a lot of intruders board my ship and they always pry my doors open with ease if I do not upgrade. When I do it gives me much more time to drain out the air in their rooms.
• If possible have a crew member at each of the stations for improvement.-- The four that can have a worker I place there, the bridge, the engine room, the weapons room, and the shields room. Also keep in mind the species of the person you place at the stations. I like placing Engies and humans on stations first.
• Prioritize your weapons.-- Shooting their shields first is nearly always a good idea, especially when in an astroid field. Go for the oxygen if you can spare it.
• ALWAYS keep an eye on your supplies, you don't want to be left stranded without an fuel or spare parts.
• Try to fill up your ship with crew members.-- If you're in a tough battle and a fire breaks loose in a room you don't want to have to send in someone who's busy running the engines. You can always  use spare crew members to clean up during or after a battle.

Please try and add on to the list of tips, and try not to give away any spoilers.

Actually don't have your weapons on autofire.

If you are running something like a beam weapon that can't cut through shields, have other weapons fire first to disable the shields, or wear them down, so your beam's shot doesn't get wasted.
Even if you are running non beam weapons I find it to be good practice to not use autofire, so I can get used to not using it.

Yeah I don't use auto-fire. I find the zoltan cruiser really good it has a rocky beginning, but get a weapon pre-igniter and boy the opening part of the battle you can due so much damage while receiving minimal in return. I find that having 5-6 people is good once your crew is any bigger macroing can get a bit frustrating. Upgrade your ship all around like having 3 bars of shield and engines half way give you a good mix on defense. I personally find cloak and drones a waste of power. a mix of 1 or 2 lasers, 1 ion instead of laser, 1 beam weapon, and one missle. Always try to get there shields down asap then go for the weapons then if you can hit there oxygen so the AI fix that as a priority.  Hope this could help at all from a 40hr player of the game/ beat the boss 3 times.

My best advices

  • Go for cloaking ASAP, you will only benefit from it
  • If you use missiles, aim your other guns on the engines or pilot.  No evade = all missiles hit = no missiles wasted

  • To beat the boss you need weapons that can hit every turn, and cloaking. (I won by having the light laser m.III and Glave beam)

  • Easest way to beat the first stage of the boss is having a crew teleporter and taking his arms down (It TOTALY doesn't work on the 2nd stage, learned this the hard way)

  • The most powerfull ship is *ehh* Kerstel. (or a least that what I think)

  • Don't name your crew after your favorite Firefly characters, you'll cry when they die
  • Security cameras are a useful upgrade
  • Try fighting in the med bay if you can
  • pay attention to who's doing what, some species have certain abilities (fireproof, survive with not O2 etc)

Well, there's my little addition onto the list.

I'm glad I don't name my characters then. Everything else though I agree with.
